Dog Adoption Event in Westland
Come down to Detroit Animal Care & Control (DACC) any day of the week, and you’ll witness our dedicated volunteers in action. From walking dogs and socializing cats to handling laundry and dishes, our volunteers are an essential part of #TeamDACC. During the first 3 weeks, your pet might start to show more of their personality. They could become more comfortable, but some challenges might arise, such as testing boundaries or exhibiting signs of anxiety.
Some pets who are not yet adoptable may need a foster for a variety of situations. Let us know how you would like to help with your unique abilities. Pick up a pup from DACC for a lunch date, a coffee run, or just some time exploring indoors or out. You’ll be helping them decompress, socialize, and maybe even meet their future family.

Our volunteers are the backbone of our mission, ensuring that every canine and feline resident experiences care, enrichment, and understanding. FoDACC exists to support DACC in the areas of volunteer management, donation solicitation and acceptance, and live release, which includes shelter intervention.

Spaying and neutering not only helps control the pet population but also has health benefits, reducing the risk of certain diseases and behavioral issues. Let me tell you about one of the bestest boys, my Frankie. He was one of the first dogs that Friends of DACC treated for heartworms that year. He’s the first of our dogs to meet any foster and he can match any play style. This 90-minute live virtual session will go over everything you need to know about bringing home a shelter animal–whether it’s your 1st or 201st pup.

People who have lost a pet think it couldn’t happen to them, and yet 1 in 3 pets get lost at least once. Ensure your pets have proper identification, such as collars with tags and microchips. Proper identification increases the chances of a quick reunion if your pet is lost. All dogs adopted from DACC are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Each dog goes home with a new leash, collar, harness and one-month supply of flea and tick and heartworm prevention. There are options to adopt, foster, foster-to-adopt, and even take a dog on a slumber party or a Detroit Dogventure.
Shelter life can be stressful for our beloved furry residents. That’s why we have implemented innovative programs to provide comfort, companionship, and adventure. FoDACC supplements the budget allocated to DACC by the City of Detroit.
Join Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control for an adoption event at Magoo’s Pet Store. Join other pet owners and prospective pet owners to ask questions, share tips and support, and learn together, in a fun and casual setting. There is a new topic, free dog and cat food, and access to free spay/neuter services each session. Join us for Detroit Pet People, a community meetup designed for pet owners and aspiring pet owners. This is a space to ask questions, share advice, and learn together while connecting with others in Detroit who care about animals.
He’s a complete joy every day and brings so much love and silliness to my life. I’m blessed to be his service person and shepherd him through life. Together we make a great team and I’ll continue to protect and take the best care of him. I’m forever grateful to DACC for rescuing him so our paths could cross. After fostering her for a few months and seeing her slowly come out of her shell, there was no way we could let her go. So we officially adopted her and made her a part of our family.
From July 5–19, adoption fees at Detroit Animal Care and Control are completely covered, thanks to the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event. We apply for grants, hold fundraisers, form relationships with donors/foundations, and accept all material and in-kind donations from our supporters to be used at DACC. We believe in science-based training methods that are not harmful to a dog’s mental or physical state. We believe all dogs are individuals and we are against breed-specific legislation.

Provide a calm and quiet environment, let them sleep uninterrupted in their own designated sleeping spot, and establish a consistent routine for feeding and potty breaks. Keep them separate from any other pets, and limit introductions to only household members. Giving your pet time to feel secure in their new space will put them on the right path.
By assessing behavior at multiple touchpoints, we can better understand each dog as an individual and provide adopters with the information they need to find their perfect match. Our short-term foster program offers a much-needed break from the shelter environment. Youth under 18 will team up with award-winning pet photographers to learn how to capture the heart and soul of adoptable dogs.
